Test in local languages first.
Most AI tools are built for English. When used in regional languages like Hindi, Tamil, or Sinhala, they make frequent mistakes and cost up to five times more to run. An inaccurate translation in public services can deny citizens benefits they qualify for.
Three rules for public agencies
- Test locally: Test citizen-facing tools in everyday local dialects, not just textbook English.
- Ensure fair access: Citizens who do not speak English must receive equal service quality.
- Keep human backup: Always provide a direct phone line or service counter with human staff when the AI tool fails.
